Boston Bobby

Saturday, December 25th, 2010

For Christmas Fabby sent me a bobble body, depicting Bobby Orr’s Stanley Cup winning overtime goal from 1970. Just as Bobby was shooting the puck past legendary goalie Glenn Hall to clinch the cup, he was tripped by Blues defenseman Noel Picard, sending Bobby flying through the air, where an alert photographer captured an iconic [...]

Women’s NCAA Hockey

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

This afternoon I was over at the University of Minnesota to watch an NCAA quarterfinal match between the Gophers and Boston College, with the winner to advance to the Frozen Four. There were a lot of Boston College fans there, not a majority, but quite a few. One BC guy even brought his coronet, which [...]

Went South Big Time

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

This hasn’t been a good year for the Gopher men’s hockey team. Last night during the TV coverage of their 4-1 loss at Denver, it was noted that the Gopher power play efficiency is 10th in the league. Note that the WCHA is a ten-team league. This morning’s Star Tribune pointed out that the Gophers [...]

I spent portions of the last 3 days down at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis photographing the action at the U.S. Pond Hockey Championship. Games were conducted on 25 rinks, and this year they had over 200 teams. Photos are available on my pond hockey photos web site.

Erik Johnson was recently selected as the number one pick in the NHL draft by the St. Louis Blues. He just enrolled at the University of Minnesota, and will be playing for the Gophers this fall. A story about Johnson in this morning’s Star Tribune included the following: “Though Johnson has not said he will [...]

Gimme Five

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

This morning’s Star Tribune has an interview with Danny Irmen, who passed on his senior season with the Gopher hockey team to sign with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild.  In the interview, Irmen was asked to name his favorite hockey movie, and he gave  the not surprising answer “Slap Shot”.  He then went on to add: [...]

Hockey Battle

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

Last night the North Dakota Fighting Sioux were in town to play the Gophers in men’s hockey. It promised to be a high powered game, with 7 NHL first round draft picks on the ice. Despite the fact that 5 of those 7 skate for North Dakota, the Gophers were ahead on shots 26-5 half [...]

Never Saw That Before

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

For Christmas my son Dave gave me a pair of tickets to a hockey game at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul. Pat and I went to see the game, which featured the women’s national teams from the US and Canada. Most folks expect these two teams to meet in the gold medal game [...]

Head Shot

Monday, December 19th, 2005

Going around the dial tonight, I caught a bit of the Wild’s victory over the Stars. At one point in the second period, someone from the Stars had the puck in the corner, behind the Wild’s goal line. The guy takes a high shot, hitting the Wild’s goalie in the side of the helmet, knocking [...]
