3 – 10,000 – 30

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

This morning when I got up it was 3 degrees. But, the wind was not blowing, so I decided to go down to open skating at the speed skating oval when it opened later in the morning. Did my first 10K of the season, breaking the gaffer standard of 30 minutes. All in all, a […]

Sweating Early in the Season

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Today I went down to skate on the speed skating oval in Roseville. This is the earliest in the season I’ve ever been down there to skate – they just opened on Friday. Typically I wait until mid December before starting to skate there, but it was a nice day (i.e., no wind) that was […]

Perils of Thinking

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Today, as I was getting ready to go skating, I thought that it had been years since I had fallen skating. When I fell this afternoon, fortunately there weren’t many people on the ice and no one got hurt. Did slide for a fair distance, however.

Winter Sweating

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Got down to the speed skating oval in Roseville today for the first time this winter. Skated 10,000 meters and was able to break my self-defined gaffer standard of 30 minutes. Good workout.

Certified Gaffer

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

I slipped on the ice in mid March, and my back has felt not quite right ever since. What this has meant is that I haven’t had any intense exercise since early March. The dog and I have hiked a lot of miles, but I haven’t done anything to raise my heart rate. Pat eventually […]

Minnesota Living

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

When I got up this morning, it was 17 below. But, the wind wasn’t blowing much at all, so it seemed like a good day to go down to the Oval in Roseville and get in some work on their speed skating track. Did a personal best for 10,000 meters. While I was skating, there […]

Winter Sweating, Gaffer Division

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

Yesterday I went down to the Oval in Roseville to do some pseudo speed skating on my hockey skates. With a flying start, I broke 30 minutes for 10,000 meters. After two laps, my heart rate was in the 160’s, and by the end it was in the low 170’s. Strange as it might seem, […]

Gotta Have Rules

Friday, August 4th, 2006

On August 20, St. Paul will be the hosting the St. Paul Inline Marathon. As I read up on this event, which I will likely try to photograph, I saw the following: “The rule of no gender cross drafting will be enforced in the PRO THROUGH ADVANCED categories only.“ Gotta have rules!  Nothing detracts from […]

Zamboni on the Road

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

This morning I went out to the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine to skate. As I was turning off the county road, onto the smaller road that leads to the parking lot, I see a Zamboni. It is on the same road I am on, going in the opposite direction. Technically what I saw was […]
