Fake Fakes

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

This morning there was a story in the Star Tribune for which the headline was: Can’t afford real fakes? Bra offers illusion of gel-filled sacs I’m not making this up. Apparently the Evolution bra was designed to make women look like they’ve had plastic surgery, and is aimed at “women who lust after the look […]

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

There was an item in the news today about a guy in Wisconsin who had kept his mother’s body in the freezer for a number of years, and the claim is that he had done this so he could continue to collect her Social Security checks. The headline from one news service was: Man with […]

45 v 3

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

I watched the Twins – Royals game tonight, with Johan Santana on the mound for the Twins. He gave up 1 run in 8 innings, striking out 8 in getting the win in a 2-1 game. It is early in the season; Johan has given up a few home runs, his ERA is up, but […]

Induced Hibernation

Saturday, April 23rd, 2005

There was a story in the news this week (LINK) reporting how scientits have found a way to induce hibernation in mice. Apparently exposure to hydrogen sulfide gas will cause the mice to slip into a state equivalent to hibernation, and exposure to fresh air quickly reverses things without any apparent harm to the animals. […]

McHale’s View of T-Wolves’ Season

Thursday, April 21st, 2005

Kevin McHale was a very accomplished basketball player. The jury is still out in terms of his capabilities in the front office, and his stint as the interim coach this year was less than a resounding success. There is no question, however, that he is a world class quipper. For example, see the quote from […]

Thomas Friedman Quip

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005

I was struck by the following line from a Thomas Friedman column last week: “It’s as if we have an industrial-age presidency, catering to a pre-industrial ideological base, in a post-industrial era.” Not a pleasant thought.

Vlad the Impaler

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005

This week there were news reports that Michael Schwartz, chief of staff for Senator Tom Coburn, said: “I don’t want to impeach judges. I want to impale them.” Your federal tax dollars at work; my federal tax dollars at work; our federal tax dollars at work.

Papal Election and the Sistine Chapel

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005

I saw the following in an news article today about the preparation for electing a new pope: “Secrecy within the Sistine Chapel is safeguarded by new high-tech measures. A false floor was installed last week to accommodate electronic anti-bugging devices, Vatican officials said.” This would seem to impinge on one of the all-time great Far […]

New Big 10 Record

Sunday, April 17th, 2005

Last year, Gopher basketball player Lindsay Whalen was the number 4 pick in the WNBA draft, highest ever for a player from the Big 10. Yesdterday, Janel McCarville of the Gophers was the number 1 pick in the draft. McCarville is a really good passer for a post player, and frequently sets picks that are […]

Problem ( or Opportunity?)

Tuesday, April 12th, 2005

Recently there have been news reports of business school applicants who hacked into the files at Apply Yourself to find out earlier if they had been accepted. Clearly not top notch ethical behavior. On the other hand, this serves to reinforce the idea that people really want to know where they stand, as soon as […]
