Geothermal Ice

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

A brief article in today’s Star Tribune focused on in Rochester to replace the ice-making equipment in Graham West Arena with a geothermal-powered system.  First time I have heard of using geothermal energy to make ice.

Minnesota Sapphire

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

There was a story in today’s Star Tribune about the State Historical Society’s auction of a sapphire pendant they had been given. The stone weighed just under 23 carats, and had been given by James J. Hill to his wife on Christmas Eve in 1886. The pendant, with its Kashmir sapphire, had been donated to […]

High School Track

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

This morning I went over to Totino Grace High School to photograph a track meet. The meet was for both boys and girls, but only the Mounds View girls were competing. Given the Elite Meet at Hamline University last night, today didn’t feature a full strength Mounds View girls’ squad.  Selected photos from the meet […]

Today’s paper contained an obituary for Parry O’Brien, the legendary shot putter. I knew that he had revolutionized the sport with an improved technique, and that he had won multiple Olympic medals. I failed to realize the breadth and depth of his accomplishments until I saw them spelled out today: I knew he was the […]

Sharp-Tailed Grouse

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

This morning I got up at 3:00 to go over to Grantsburg, Wisconsin to photograph sharp-tailed grouse.  The requirement is that you have to be in the blind well before sunrise, so it makes for an early start.  Unfortunately, there weren’t a lot of birds today (I went earlier in the season last year), and […]

Pleasant Lake

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

Early this afternoon Pat and I went over to Pleasant Lake so she could kayak for the first time this year.  I went along to take some pictures,  and ended up photographing a woman’s flat coated retriever as well.  Photos can be seen here.

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

On Saturday I went over to Stillwater to photograph the Mounds View boys track and field team in the 39th Pony Relays.  Mounds View came on strong as the meet progressed to pick up the win in the nine-team contest.  Photos can be seen here.
