Irish Invitational

Friday, August 31st, 2007

This  morning I went down to Rosemount to photograph a high school cross country meet, the Irish Invitational.  Mounds View has gone to this meet the last several years, no longer traveling down to Mountain Lake.  On the one hand, it is an unusual meet, in the sense that the distance is 3200 meters.  On […]

Thursday Night Racing at the Velodrome

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

I went up to the Velodrome tonight to photograph Thursday night racing, and the conditions were perfect, for racing and for taking pictures. Unfortunately, now that we are in the late part of summer, the good lighting goes away rather early in the evening. Photos can be seen here.

9th Grade Football

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

School hasn’t started yet, but I noticed that the two Mounds View 9th grade football team (MV White, MV Green) were playing a game this afternoon.  So, I went up to the high school to see if I could take pictures.  Nobody came up to me and said I couldn’t stand on the sidelines, so […]

Velodrome Photography

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

I went out to the velodrome in Blaine this afternoon to photograph some 0f the Minnesota State Championship Timed Events. Lighting was better than it is at night, and I experimented with some low-level wide-angle shots, some of which actually turned out OK. Photos can be seen at my BikePhotos web site.

24 Hours of Afton

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Starting yesterday at 5 PM, they held the 24 Hours of Afton at the Afton Alps ski area, an endurance mountain bicycle race. It appears that one could enter as an individual or as part of a 4-person team. Pictures can be seen at the MTB section of my BikePhotos web site. It was striking […]

Food at the State Fair

Friday, August 24th, 2007

An article in this morning’s Star Tribune detailed a visit yesterday to the State Fair by dozens of members of the Association of Food Journalists. The article, by Paul Levy, contained numerous quotes from these writers, many of whom found they liked walleye on a stick. One writer from Louisiana observed, “You know, I haven’t […]

Velodrome Rain Out

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

It rained quite a bit today, but by late afternoon the rain stopped, so I went out to the velodrome at the National Sports Center in Blaine to take pictures. Much to my surprise, no one was at the track. I guess the night’s racing had been canceled. Not to worry, however, because there is […]

Criminal Fitness

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

This morning’s Star Tribune had a story with the following headline: Man eludes police after 2-state, 2-hour vehicle chaseby jumping in river and swimming away Gotta admire the guy’s perseverance in eluding law enforcement officials.  On the other hand, one of the police officers involved in the chase offered the following observation on the man’s […]

Lesson from History

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

There was a story in this morning’s Star Tribune sports pages with the following headline: Former Wolf Griffin dies after hitting freight train One might ask, how do you hit a freight train, when you are driving a motor vehicle? History might provide some insights. When Eddie Griffin was with the Timberwolves, he was involved […]

Leona Helmsley

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Leona Helmsley passed away yesterday. Her husband, Harry, amassed a fortune in Manhattan real estate, and he had been a low-key kind of guy. Leona, on the other hand, decided that it was important to be in the public eye, and be flamboyant while doing it. Gail Collins had a column in today’s NY Times […]
