Photographic Trifecta

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

We had not had a day that got above freezing, this year, until today. Temperatures got into the upper 40’s, a massive change, but this did not hose up a great day of photography. I started out this morning over on Lake Phalen in St. Paul, shooting “Fire on Ice”, iceboat racing that is part […]

Ski Jumping

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

This morning I was down in Bloomington at the site of the ski jumps for the Minneapolis Ski Club. They were having a training session for an international event tonight on their biggest hill (70 meters). Since I find sunlight to be a major help in photography, I decided to photograph the training session rather […]

Pond Hockey Championshiops, Day 3

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Today I was again down at Lake Nokomis bright and early to photograph the third (and final) day of the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships. While it was below zero this morning, it was not as cold as yesterday. I was pleased with some of the photos I got today, which can be seen at my […]

Pond Hockey Championships, Day 2

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

This morning I was down at Lake Nokomis for the second day of the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships. Temperatures were well below zero at the start of play, but the wind wasn’t blowing, so things weren’t all that bad. Better shots from today are on the web at my Pond Hockey Photos web site.

Pond Hockey Championships, Day 1

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

This morning I was down at Lake Nokomis for the first day of the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships. It was 20 degrees when I got up, with a strong wind. The temperature fell throughout the day and it is predicted to be well below zero at the start of play the next two days. But, […]

Mixed-Gender Hockey

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Last night I went up to the Schwan’s Super Rink to photograph a game in the A Elite League between the women’s national team (Team USA) and Summit ELITE. Of the 3 games I’ve photographed this year, this featured the best action, with Summit winning 2-0. Photos can be found on the web here.

Tool Making Primate

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

The Science section in today’s NY Times had a short article on tool making by capuchin monkeys. Scientists noticed that these monkeys were using stones to crack open palm nuts. When scientists left a variety of stones for the monkeys to choose from, they noticed that the monkeys almost always picked the heaviest stone. “Here […]

Doug Home from the Rehab Facility

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Last week I went out to Pocatello, Idaho to visit my brother. I happened to be there for his last two days in the rehab facility and his first few days at home. I last saw him only a few days after his neck surgery in Idaho Falls, and Doug has made incredible progress since […]

High School Cross Country Skiing

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

This afternoon I went over to Battle Creek Park and photographed part of a high school cross country meet. Racing started at 3:30, so given the terrain, the sun was getting low in the sky when the girls were finishing and the boys were starting out. Photos are on the web here.

Retrieving at the Lake

Monday, January 5th, 2009

This morning Pat and I took Hana on a hike around the island. Pat kindly came along to help me take some retrieving photos, as she tossed the retrieving dummy while I took pictures. We didn’t get any fantastic shots today, but we got a number that were decent, which are on the web here.
