Down to the Third String Back

During pre-game warm ups for yesterday’s football game against Michigan State, the Gophers learned that star running back Laurence Maroney’s ankle sprain would keep him out of the game. Back up Gary Russell was knocked out of the game in the second quarter, but not before notching his eighth multiple touchdown game of the season. This put the Gophers in the position of using Amir Pinnix at running back, a sophomore with no carries in the Big 10 season. Amir gamely did his best, gaining 206 yards on the ground.

206 yards by a back who hadn’t carried the ball much? How can this be?

  • They have a really productive offensive line.
  • They have a talented group of running backs.
  • The Gophers have some real offensive balance – this is the seventh consecutive season they have rushed for over 2,000 yards and passed for over 2,000 yards.
